JOB PURPOSE     

Under general supervision, supports in the transition of new products from their creation in the laboratory to commercial production through the application of process engineering principles and technology transfer. Provides support to senior staff while applying general knowledge of product performance and attributes, equipment performance and capability, and global production requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Piloting: Small scale test batches to predict performance at a commercial scale.
 Produces pilot/replication batches using routine methodology. Evaluates equipment capabilities and designs new processes for small and full scale qualification batches to enable commercial production of MK formulas. Supervises/participates in qualification batches.
 Selects the appropriate vessel/technology based on general knowledge of product type and the results from collaboration with the formulator at lab scale.
 Records the pilot results and completes necessary documentation. 45%
2. Stability: Predicting product ruggedness and shelf-life.
 Prepares samples creates forms for submission to the stability lab.
 Performs data analysis of stability results. 5%
3. Scale-Up: Transition from laboratory to production environment.
 Participates in the pre-R&R batch with the formulator as the handoff from lab to pilot scale-up.
 Creates the manufacturing instructions for small and full scale qualification batches based on pilot activities/learnings.
 Understand the relationships between ingredients and formula manufacturability. 20%
4. Technology Transfer: Sharing technical information required for successful Global manufacturing.
 Prepares routine documents for distribution to subsidiaries and contract vendors.
 Aides in analysis of process capabilities and providing guidance for equipment applications to successfully produce MK bulk products at subsidiaries and contract vendors. May review bulk manufacturing documents for subsidiaries and contract vendors. 15%
5. Process Engineering: Application of process engineering skills.
 Applies general principles of process engineering to create the manufacturing process,
 Performs basic dimensional analysis and understands equipment design, function and application. 5%
6. Manufacturing Support: Facilitates quality and efficient product manufacturing systems. (5%)
 Supervises/supports full scale qualification batches and first bulk production.
 Serves as a technical resource to aide in troubleshooting/resolving production issues related to commercial bulk production. 10%

In addition to the above, incumbent is expected to meet the required competencies for this position as defined in the competency profile.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

Education Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent
Experience 1 to 2 years

1. Must understand general principles of production, quality assurance, scale-up, and product safety. Requires a basic knowledge and experience in process engineering, scale-up design and validation, technology transfer to production, equipment capabilities and translations, as well as experimental design and evaluation of data.
2. Must be keenly aware that there are hazards in both the laboratory and production environments. Must be responsible for working safely, and adhering to all safety policies and procedures.
3. Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
4. Must understand the impact of scale-up decisions on the eventual processing and production of products.
5. Must have basic project management skills.
6. Must work long and/or irregular hours to support pilot/qualification batches and troubleshooting of bulk production issues.
