LEGAL DEPARTMENT

JOB PURPOSE:
Under supervision of Counsel, independently performs a variety of generally moderate to complex tasks relating to legal issues that must be addressed by or for the Company in the IP Practice area. Incumbent may occasionally be called upon to perform tasks for one or more additional practice areas or may be reassigned to a different practice area based upon departmental and Company needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Receives requests directly and assesses the needs of other departments for legal assistance and/or information and takes appropriate action to resolve and support the needs of those departments using applicable legal standards.


2. Works with attorneys, other paralegals and/or other members of the Legal team on variety of issues relevant to the business operations of the Company impacting the Company. Makes independent assessments and evaluations of legal requirements relating to various issues and determines appropriate action and/or response.


3. Prepares moderate to complex agreements, instruments, documents and/or pleadings relating to litigation and/or business operations.


4. Conducts research, analyses and investigations and uses results to make a determination of appropriate actions.


5. Interfaces directly with outside counsel, government and quasi-governmental agencies, vendors and members of the independent sales force regarding a variety of legal issues.


6. Reviews and responds to requests regarding subpoenas, records requests or other court or administrative orders. Drafts responses to all initial correspondence or requests.

 

7. Reviews pleadings; drafts discovery responses and obtains responsive documents; facilitates the creation of corporate affidavits; communicates and interfaces with outside counsel.

 

8. May assist attorneys and/or other departments throughout the Company with special projects or other assignments and shall use independent judgment and exercise discretion in identifying, evaluating and addressing any legal issues and determining proper utilization of Company resources and personnel.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited four-year college/university. Paralegal certificate from an accredited institution beneficial.  

Experience: Prefer 3-5 years of Paralegal experience, including at least 2 years of solid IP experience, preferably with trademarks, in a legal office or a corporate legal department.

 

1. Requires a familiarity with IP terminology and processes.

2. Requires strong legal research and analytical skills.  
3. Must have excellent human relations and communication skills, tact, diplomacy and a high level of professionalism and confidentiality in order to interface with outside and opposing counsel, all levels of management, the independent sales force, and government officials.
4. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills in order to effectively interact with both internal and external contacts.
5. Must have ability to work in a timely manner by exercising discretion and utilizing independent judgment to meet business needs and demands.
6. Strong organizational skills and project management skills required.
7. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.

8. Familiarity with case/matter management systems or programs preferred.
