Job Summary:

Under general guidance, works as a part of the Materials Science function to support and perform activities to enable the development and delivery of novel products to the Mary Kay independent sales force. Provides key information to R&D partners through the execution of laboratory tests to validate package components, resin samples, or raw material ingredients as part of New Product Development. Ensures quality of testing data. Communicates effectively with peers, management, and R&D partners. Collaborates effectively to achieve project deliverables and organizational goals.

About the Role:

Responsibilities:

             Consistently applies basic principles of the Material Science. Functions as a primary laboratory resource and has deepening understanding of the principles behind chemical and physical testing on materials used for packages including engineering characteristics such as dimensions, force or torque measurements. Executes work under general guidance and seeks consultation when addressing non-standard technical issues that may arise.

             With guidance from SME’s, functions as the Material Science representative on NPD project teams for new ingredients. Partners with Product Formulation seeks consultation from senior Materials Science experts to propose appropriate testing plans and deliver meaningful ingredient specifications. Critically evaluates project needs and works diligently to resolve observed issues. Summarizes key and complex concepts that enable decision-making.

             Consistently demonstrates a continuous improvement mindset in daily work. Begins to critically evaluate work processes and may make thoughtful proposals on how to improve our work. When present with a limited number of possible solutions, expected to make data-driven decisions within discipline. Participates in initiatives to support of organizational goals. Provides formal updates to leadership as to project progress, challenges, and next steps.

             Develops the technical capabilities of self. Remains externally focused and maintains awareness of industry best practices and emerging technologies in chemistry, engineering, and/or Material Sciences. Seeks opportunities both internally and externally to grow knowledge base and skill set.

             Expected to lead routine laboratory maintenance efforts.

             This job requires on-site work at a Mary Kay facility.

Skills & Experience:

Education:  Bachelor/University Degree in Chemistry or Material Science. Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.

Experience:  2+ years’ industry experience required. Cosmetic, consumer product, food, or pharmaceutical industry experience preferred.

Additional Skills & Abilities

             Must possess a strong foundation in the principles of Chemistry, material science or mechanical engineering. Mastery of basic analytical techniques required. Exposure to and an understanding of audit/inspection protocols, statistics, and FDA and GMP regulations is strongly preferred.

             Must possess excellent communication skills that help explain complex concepts to collaborators, along with written and presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.

             Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

             Must be well organized, capable of managing high levels of detail, and handling multiple activities/tasks under pressure.

             Demonstrates agility. Able to adapt to changing priorities

             Must be able to perform duties with minimal direction and independently perform assignments with general guidance for expected results.
